Tri-State Webinar: Communicating with Parents Throughout an Educational Evaluation for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Parents play a crucial role in the evaluation of autism spectrum disorder. In this webinar, Dr. Hepburn will share insights on how to raise concerns with parents about a child’s development, demonstrate how to describe the evaluation process to parents, and explain best practices on how to interview a parent to learn about a child’s development and behaviors when autism is suspected.

 

Learner Objectives

After attending this webinar participants will:

  • Describe how to raise concerns with parents about a child’s development/behaviors, specifically when ASD is suspected
  • Demonstrate how to describe the educational evaluation process to parents, including how it’s different from a clinical/medical evaluation
  • Explain how to interview a parent to learn about a child’s developmental history and behaviors at home
  • Identify 3 important considerations when sharing findings of evaluations with parents

 

Presenter Information:

Susan Hepburn is a Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University and a licensed clinical psychologist. She is actively engaged in teaching at the university and consulting in schools on educational identification and intervention for students with autism spectrum disorders. She is collaborating with community partners to establish a clinic on the CSU campus which will provide evaluations, consultation, and direct support to persons with ASD and their families.
