Family Engagement Survey

The Kansas Family Engagement Survey—Version 2 (FES–2), developed by Kansas researchers, educators, and families, is grounded in research and the PTA National Standards for Family–School Partnerships. The survey is designed to be distributed districtwide, PreK through high school, to every student’s parents or guardians. The FES–2 measures success across five domains:

  • Welcoming Environment
  • Supporting Student Learning
  • Effective Communication
  • Sharing Power and Advocacy
  • Community Involvement

Through DistrictTools.org district and school leaders have access to summary reports in real time and may generate a variety of customized reports, such as viewing the data by student population subgroups or comparing results across years.

When taking the survey online, the first question asks families to choose their preferred language from 13 available options. The following PDFs list all survey items.

The FES–2 meets the federal ESEA Title 1 Part A requirements for parent/guardian evaluation and feedback to inform family engagement policies and strategies. The survey asks families to rate their experiences regarding regular, meaningful two-way communication involving student academic learning.

The FES–2 meets the federal IDEA requirement for the Kansas State Performance Plan (SPP) Indicator 8. Indicator 8 requires every district to survey parents/guardians of each child with a disability who receives special education services on whether the school facilitated their involvement to improve outcomes for their child.
