Course description

Children with challenging behavior are a growing concern in most preschool classrooms. This full day workshop will provide participants with an understanding of Prevent-Teach-Reinforce for Young Children (PTR-YC), a systematic model of intervention for young children with the most persistent and severe challenging behaviors. This model is based on evidence-based procedures of positive behavior support, which provide strategies and interventions for all tiers of an MTSS model. The PTR-YC model is designed to give providers a process for assessment and intervention, especially for those children with tier 2 and 3 social emotional/behavioral needs. This workshop, will include descriptions of the steps of the model, along with examples designed to help participants use strategies with a high level of fidelity, leading to improved effectiveness and reductions in challenging behavior.

Participants in the training on PTR-YC will:

  • Learn how to implement all steps of the PTR-YC process;
  • Learn how to use the PTR-YC assessment forms in order to complete classroom assessments and individualized functional behavioral assessments of children’s challenging behavior;
  • Be able to describe evidence-based practices in each of the three categories of PTR-YC interventions – Prevent, Teach, and Reinforce;
  • Learn how to collect and summarize progress monitoring data using the practical “BRS” systems of the PTR-YC model.

This professional learning opportunity will be most meaningful for early childhood team members, including early childhood teachers, related services providers, school psychologist, principals, and district leaders responsible for overseeing early childhood programs.

Strain has also provided training and technical assistance to states and early childhood programs on including children with disabilities and challenging behavior for decades and in many states. His entire career has focused on expanding high quality inclusive options.
