Tri-State Webinar: Circle of Friends: Peer-Mediated Intervention: Part 1 of 2

Circle of Friends (CoF) is a form of Peer-Mediated Intervention (PMI). PMI is defined as a treatment approach in which typically developing peers are trained to implement behavioral interventions and facilitate social skills development in special needs populations. It has been identified as an established treatment with positive outcomes for children with autism (National Autism Center, 2009). This webinar will provide an overview of Circle of Friends, as part of a school-based program. It will cover the research behind Circle of Friends and the basic steps to implement a program.

Learner Objectives:

In Part 1, learners will:

  • Explore the evidence-base for CoF
  • Learn CoF implementation basics
  • Compare different CoF models

Presenter Information:

Mary Schlieder, Ed.D., is a high school special educator, adjunct professor, and educational consultant. Her professional interests include fostering positive inclusion experiences, peer-mediated intervention, Learning Objectives: collaborative problem solving, and active learning. She is the author of With Open Arms: Creating School Communities of Support for Kids with Social Challenges, and the 2008 Nebraska Teacher of the Year.
