For generations, teachers have been told that it is necessary to teach students to read at their “instructional levels.” A whole industry has sprung up aimed at testing children to identify their instructional levels and providing “just right” leveled readers to meet their needs both in Tier 1 and Tier 2 programs. However, what does the research say about this practice and how can we teach struggling readers to read grade level texts? This provocative presentation will answer those questions.
