Course description

Prerequisites for this course are one of our verbal behavior training, either Boot Camp or Basic Skills. If you have not taken one of these courses, please contact Jennifer Vest about alternate prerequisites. Thank you!

In this one-day in-person training, participants will learn about the VB-MAPP assessment and how to assess and administer the test.

The VB-MAPP is a criterion-reference assessment tool, curriculum guide, and skill-tracking system for children with Autism or other children with language delays. There are five components of the VB-MAPP, which provide a baseline level of performance, direction for intervention, a system for tracking skill acquisition, a tool for outcome measures, and a framework for curriculum planning. The first component is the milestones assessment, which measures the child’s existing verbal and related skills. The assessment contains 170 measurable learning and language milestones that are sequenced and balanced across three developmental levels (0-18 months, 18-30 months, and 30-48 months). The skills assessed include mand, tact, echoic, intraverbal, listener, motor imitation, independent play, social and social play, visual perceptual and matching-to-sample, linguistic structure, group and classroom skills, and early academics. The Milestones Assessment includes the Early Echoic Skills Assessment (EESA) subtest developed by Barbara E. Esch, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCBA. The second component is the VB-MAPP Barriers Assessment, which assesses 24 common learning and language acquisition barriers faced by children with autism or other developmental disabilities (i.e., behavior problems, failure to generalize, defective social skills, etc). The third component is the VB-MAPP Transition Assessment, which contains 18 assessment areas and can help to identify whether a child is making meaningful progress and has acquired the skills necessary for learning in a less restrictive educational environment. This assessment tool can provide a measurable way for a child’s IEP team to make decisions and set priorities in order to meet the child’s educational needs. The fourth component is the VB-MAPP Task Analysis and Skills Tracking, which further breaks down the skills and serves as a more complete and ongoing learning and language skills curriculum guide. The fifth and final component is the VB-MAPP Placement and IEP Goals, which correspond with the four assessments above.

This training is designed for people who work with any age, early education students with significant deficits in language skills. We encourage speech pathologists, school psychologists, BCBAs, coordinators, or other professionals charged with training other adult learners who are confident in doing so in an applied learning context.

  • Participants will need to complete prerequisites before training.
  • Participants will need laptops and charging cords for activities throughout the day.
  • Please indicate in "Accommodations" if you will need a lactation room.
  • Participants will only receive CE credit if they attend the whole training and do not leave early.
  • Lunch will NOT be provided. Lunch will be on your own.

This event is approved for Type 2 continuing education units for BCaBAs and BCBAs by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. A total of 6.5 CEUs will be offered for this event.
