Course description

Stepping into AAC  is a collaborative project created by PrAACtical AAC and the Angelman Syndrome Foundation (ASF). Typically, this is a 20-week course, but it will be condensed into 14 weeks. This series will guide teams on integrating AAC into their daily lives, both at school and at home. Activities will be online modules that you complete on your own. Two online live sessions will be done, one at the beginning and one at the end. These will be recorded if participants are not able to attend live.

The hope is that teams will participate in this together. At a minimum, you need the following participants to ensure follow-through:

  • SLP
  • Team member who works with student daily

Others (may help support some modules)

  • Parents/Caregivers
  • Special education teacher
  • General education teacher
  • Related service providers
  • Anyone else who interacts with the student and wants to learn more about AAC

To complete the course and receive a certificate, the following expectations must be met:

  • View 80% of the Module videos (this will be monitored via the Infinitec platform)
  • Attend or watch the video from the September 8 session (monitored via attendance or Infinitec platform for videos)
  • Use the Engage platform to ask 1 question and answer or respond to 1 question for at least 10 of the 12 sessions. These do not have to be on the same week or for the same module. A total of 10 questions and 10 answers/responses will count for participation.
  • Attend or watch the video from the December 11 session. (monitored via attendance or Infinitec platform for videos)

Approved for 6.5 hours of continuing education clock hours for Kansas-licensed Speech-Language Pathologists by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Apply AAC strategies from the Stepping into AAC program by incorporating daily AACtion Steps and Signposts into real-life communication routines with learners.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of different AAC practices by comparing learner engagement and communication outcomes across various daily activities.
  • Evaluate the impact of AAC implementation by reflecting on learner progress, family/team collaboration, and identifying strategies to strengthen ongoing AAC use.
