In this series, we will answer the most frequently asked questions we receive from school administrators. The interviewees for this webinar will provide succinct, practical ways for school administrators to support students, families, and staff in the educational journey of students with autism.
Part 1 will answer the frequently asked questions from Administrators including: What is autism and what is the school’s role in the educational identification process? Do most students with autism need a paraeducator working with them? How do we effectively meet the needs of students with autism, and the staff working with them? What are effective strategies for dealing with problem behaviors and diverse sensory needs? What do we do when things aren’t working?
Part 2 will include interviews and tips from current school administrators and will include topics such as how to support staff training needs, how to help staff individualize programming for students with autism, how to be involved and or lead effective IEP meetings, working with outside providers, and more.
Annette Wragge is the State Coordinator for the NE Autism Spectrum Disorders Network. In her role as State Coordinator, Annette works with regional coordinators and various agencies across the state to provide training and technical assistance in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorders. She organizes and provides training opportunities to support the needs of teachers, administrators, and parents of children with ASD. Annette completed her Board Certified Behavior Analyst certification in May 0f 2014. Annette has completed advanced-level training in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Structured Teaching, Visual Supports, Verbal Behavior Training, The Assessment for Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS), Social Stories, and various Instructional Strategies for Individuals on the Autism Spectrum. presented locally and nationally on topics related to Autism Spectrum Disorder, and co-authored the 2011 Hidden Curriculum One a Day Calendar for Kids. In 2011 she authored the Social narratives: Online training module. Autism Internet Modules, and in 2012 co-authored the Screening and Autism: Online training module. Jamie Lewis is as a Special Education Coordinator for an Educational Service Unit and Central Region ASD Project Coordinator. She has served as an occupational therapist in public schools in central Nebraska and earned her initial teaching endorsement in 7-12 special education in May 2016, with an endorsement in Autism Spectrum Disorder. She has a Master’s degree in Special Education Administration and Occupational Therapy. Additionally, she is a certified Appreciative Inquiry Facilitator and Conversations Worth Having Trainer. Her experience in pediatrics spans over 20 years and in various settings including the natural contexts of early intervention, preschools, and school settings. She is experienced with diverse populations including cerebral palsy, developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, blind and visual impairment, traumatic brain injury, and learning disabilities.
Ashley received her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her M.Ed. in Special Education, Consultation, and Collaboration with an emphasis on Autism from Arizona State University. She became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst in 2017. Ashley has worked in clinical, home, and school settings, specializing in helping individuals with autism and related disorders become more independent while meeting social, communication, and behavioral goals.
