An important component to being a culturally responsive educator is knowing yourself, which includes an awareness of how your identity intersects with your students, parents, and colleagues. Your awareness regarding how identities are positioned in society, throughout history and how this information can empower you to better understand, as well as meet the needs of your students and learning community.
Presenter Biography: Emily Abedon is a Rhode Island-based educator and leader. Her work and her life center social justice, children, and education. Emily serves as the Chief Learning Officer at Equity Institute. With an anti-oppression lens, she works to evaluate, design, and implement strategic equity and anti-racism work in schools and organizations. Her passion for leadership and design comes from wanting to help leaders, educators and organizations embrace action that works toward creating systemic change.

2) understand the eight social identifiers; and
3) relate how identity has many characteristics and affects relationships within the school building and classroom.
