Students experiencing homelessness may move frequently which can present challenges when arranging transportation services. To minimize school-based disruptions for children and youth experiencing homelessness (CYEH), the McKinney-Vento Act ensures that students may complete the school year at the school attended when permanently housed, or the school in which the child or youth was last enrolled, including a preschool (McKinney-Vento Act section 722(g)(3)(I)(ii). This requirement is known as the “school of origin” and it includes feeder schools for the next grade level if the student is experiencing homelessness when the final grade level is completed for a given building. In this 60-minute session, we will define school of origin, review transportation services required for students experiencing homelessness and discuss transportation strategies.
