The KSDE/TASN Educate Kansas Teacher Recruitment and Retention Survey was developed in collaboration with Kansas State University. This survey aims to identify and promote Kansas teacher education job opportunities while prioritizing the recruitment of underrepresented populations and addressing other high-need teaching areas, particularly the demand for special educators. Additionally, the survey data is designed to help district administrators address teacher shortages by offering targeted coaching to improve staff retention.

The survey was developed using multiple data sources, including the Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS), its most recent iteration, and the National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS). These surveys, managed by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), collect data from more than 30,000 public school teachers in each wave. They provide state and nationally representative samples of U.S. schools and teachers and have been conducted periodically from 1987–1988 through 2020–2021. Over the years, these surveys have been widely studied and used in thousands of research efforts examining teacher recruitment and retention issues.
