TASN-ATBS Webinar: An Overview of Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Webinar Description

In this archived webinar, participants will gain a broader understanding of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Since first being recognized in 2007 by the American Speech/Language Hearing Association as a separate and distinct speech sound disorder, research has significantly expanded the understanding of this complex and lifelong neurological speech disorder. Current definitions and diagnostic characteristics will be explained, along with best practices for evidence-based intervention and implementation. Participants will learn why apraxia requires a different therapeutic approach and techniques beyond what is needed for other speech disorders. Research on dual diagnosis of apraxia and autism will be discussed, along with implications for treatment and potential impact in the classroom.

Learning Objectives

After attending this webinar, participants will:

  • List at least 3 main characteristics of CAS
  • Identify specific approaches and techniques for CAS
  • Learn about prevalence data on dual diagnosis between CAS and ASD
  • Understand the potential implications CAS may have in the class
