Social cognition involves social awareness, emotional awareness, relationship building, self-management, and emotional regulation. Social cognition is a developmental issue and can impact a person’s confidence and competence in almost all social situations. This presentation will highlight the use of a highly systemized scale to teach skills in these four areas.
Kari Dunn Buron, MS, has been an educator of students with autism spectrum disorders for over 30 years. She is the co-author of The Incredible 5-Point Scale and the author of When My Worries Get Too Big-Revised (Mom’s Choice Award 2013 Gold), A 5 Could Make Me Lose Control and A 5 is Against the Law! (2008 ASA literary award winner). Kari is the co-editor of the textbook Learners on the Autism Spectrum: Preparing Highly Qualified Educators (2009 ASA literary award winner) and a co-author of Social Behavior and Self-Management (a scale book for adults). Kari’s most recent project is a social skills curriculum called The Social Times Curriculum (based on the Social Times magazine and winner of a National Indie Excellence Award).
