Unit 3 of LETRS explores basic phonics skills, defines common terminology and digs into how to teach phonics and spelling within a comprehensive phonics lesson plan. The LETRS Phonics and Word-Reading Survey is used to show how to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses in this area. Because reading words accurately and automatically is crucial for students to do the real work of reading—comprehending, this unit is devoted to helping students to “crack the code.”
Participants will understand why “code-emphasis” instruction is important and different from “meaning-emphasis” instruction. Phoneme-grapheme correspondence in the English language, as well as basic phonic elements and patterns will be reviewed. Also included is a comprehensive lesson plan with explicit components and routines, including spelling. Participants will learn the purpose and use of decodable text as well as how to select and evaluate instructional materials that support systematic, explicit, code-based instruction.
Registration may be cancelled up to 14 days prior to the event for a full refund. Cancellations received within 14 days of the event will not be refunded. No-show registrations will also not be refunded.
