Course description

Universal Protocol for Accommodations in Reading uPAR is based on the work of Dr. Denise DeCoste and Linda Bastiani Wilson, authors of the widely embraced PAR (Protocol for Accommodations in Reading). Relying on subjective judgment, teachers are no better than chance, at determining when a student needs a read-aloud accommodation (Fuchs & Fuchs 2001).

According to the CAST Universal Design for Learning Framework all students benefit from multiple means of representation.  The uPAR from Don Johnston is a quick screening that allows teachers to determine if students comprehend best when text is read silently by the student, read aloud by a human voice, or read aloud by a digital voice. The data then can be shared with students to provide feedback on how they best comprehend information.  During the second session, participants will analyze classroom and individual student uPAR data.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • review the educator instructions for creating a uPAR Protocol

  • create a uPAR protocol and administer uPAR to a whole class

  • analyze classroom summary uPAR data

  • examine and discuss individual uPAR student data

  • Reflect on data and how to use the data with students and class
