Course description

Author Tom Clancy is quoted as saying "America is the most inventive country in the world because everybody has access to information.”  However, having access to information and being able to access that information are two different concepts, and for those who struggle with traditional, visual print material because of disability or language barrier, that access to information can be extremely limited.  This presentation will explain the differences between the types of print and digital materials available, and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each.  Resources to make those materials accessible will be shared, and participants will have the opportunity to use those resources to make that information accessible to the largest number of students possible.

Objectives:

  1. The participants will define digital text and accessible educational materials.
  2. The participants will compare and contrast traditional printed text and digital text.
  3. The participants will identify and access sources of digital text.
  4. The participants will participate in hands-on activities that will give them the opportunity to use web-based and mobile tools to manipulate digital text and make it accessible.
  5. The participants will compile a list of free and commercially-available digital and accessible text resource.
