Title: UDL Lesson Design Using the TIES 5-15-45 Minute Collaboration Tool
Description: Kansas City Kansas Public School Mark Twain staff, Beverly Hovorak, will present how she used the Universal Desing for Learning Guidelines to elevate the American Revolution unit for her elementary classroom. The KCKPS 5th grade is made up of diverse learners from varied backgrounds, languages, and experiences. To reach the wide variability of students in her classroom, she found intentional UDL planning and staff collaboration were key. The team used the TIES tool to proactively plan the lesson to focus on firm goals and high expectations. Students were provided voice and choice during learning. Universal Technology tools were provided to the whole class to lower barriers in reading, writing, language, and spelling. Focusing on the UDL Guidelines also provided flexibility so students could demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways. Beverly will share specific instructional strategies she used to elevate her students' engagement, increase their independence, and capture their learning and understanding.
