Course description

Kansas Disability Mentoring Day

This presentation, part of the Transition Tuesday series, introduces Kansas Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) — a statewide initiative connecting students with disabilities to career exploration tied directly to transition goals. It covers what DMD is and its Kansas footprint (seven communities, 443 students served in 2025), practical guidance for schools on preparing to host or participate in a local DMD event (identifying students, prepping mentees, planning logistics, and following up), the range of activity formats that have worked across Kansas (job shadowing, career fairs/panels, informational interviews), and case studies from Salina's first two years of growth. It closes with a spotlight on Beyond Barriers' 25-year DMD program in Hutchinson, illustrating how sustained community partnerships between schools, employers, and sponsors can grow into one reaching hundreds of students over the years, with practical lessons learned for educators and community partners looking to start or expand DMD in their own communities.
