Course description

TASN Autism and Tertiary Behavior Supports would like to invite you to join us April 26, 2017 for a day of training on current topics in autism spectrum disorders! This year we will feature national presenters, Kelly Mahler and Cathy Pratt. Participants will attend 2 half day sessions on the topics of Interoception and Parent and Professional Collaboration.

Topics:

Interoception, The 8th Sensory System: Practical Considerations and Strategies for Improving Self-Regulation and Social Skills

Kelly Mahler, MS, OTR/L

Interoception is an extremely important sensory system that helps us to ‘feel’ the internal states of our body like hunger, thirst, needing the bathroom, pain, sexual arousal, heart rate and muscle tension. Additionally, research indicates that interoception is closely tied to our emotional experience.  This presentation will provide an overview of what research tells us about interoception, and how to apply this research when developing programming for individuals with autism. Discussion will focus on the link between interoception and many important skill areas including self-regulation and social cognition. Several practical strategies for assessing and improving interoception will be shared. At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1.     Define interoception, the eighth sensory system

2.     List 3 specific skill areas that are influenced by interoception

3.     Describe 3 strategies used to build interoceptive awareness

Parent and Professional Collaboration: Putting the Child First

Cathy Pratt, PH.D., BCBA-D

Children benefit when parents and professionals can come together on their behalf. When this relationship is fractured, progress is harder to achieve. In this session, recommendations for collaboration are provided for children at various stages of their education. Common issues and solutions are advised.

As a result of this session, attendees will identify:

  1. Common issues that occur when families and professionals come together
  2. Recommendations and tips for collaboration when children present with problematic issues around communication, behavior and social skills
  3. Ideas for developing a seamless and comprehensive program for children
