Course description

Parents of autistic children can often feel confused, unsure, or just plain exhausted trying to deal with their autism parenting challenges. Typically, a lot of their autism “expertise” comes from Google, where they uncover a lot of what I call “Swiss Cheese” information . . . bits and pieces. . . filled with a lot of holes, and not enough details to know exactly what to do. It can be sprinkled with older autism misinformation that still circulates online.

Yet, parents are the most significant long-term teachers for their children. One of the most important goals for educators and therapists is to help parents better understand autism and how it affects their own child’s learning. Knowledgeable parents will be able to support the teaching you do by sending their children to school in a more regulated state, ready to learn. They will be able to partner with you more skillfully to help their children accomplish their learning goals and support your teaching efforts.

We need to re-evaluate the parent education component of our autistic student education. (Even ASHA says counseling families regarding communication is within the SLP scope of service.) Of course, your challenge is having time to address this need.

Learning Objectives

In this webinar, participants will learn to:

  • Recognize the need for integrating parent education into a child’s educational program

  • Target the most important topics for parent education

  • Identify resources and workable ways to provide parent support and education to help meet your student’s learning needs
