Unit 8 of LETRS delves into the myriad linguistic skills that are necessary to teach students throughout all grade levels to ensure that they become strong writers. Teachers must have expertise in the instruction of foundational writing skills (that are often overlooked): letter formation, spacing, sentence competence, paragraph organization, etc. as well as the higher-level skills of writing to support students’ work before, during and after writing. Brainstorming, making lists, talking about vocabulary words, etc. are all necessary and often overlooked in the writing process.
Participants will explore the challenges of writing and learn the phases of effective writing, both the lower-level (foundational) skills and the higher-level skills. They will work through systematic, explicit lessons that include letter formation, handwriting fluency, spelling, etc., to support fluent writing. A progression of competency skills, beginning with sentence generation through a developmental progression of writing narrative and information texts will be presented. Participants will learn how to give feedback to students and how to assess student progress in writing as well. A student writing checklist is included, along with a plan for implementing writing across the school year.
