LETRS Unit 4 goes beyond teaching basic phonics patterns for reading and spelling to a focus on advanced word study skills such as common orthographic patterns, syllable types, and morphemes that will help students read and spell multisyllabic words across all content areas. This unit gives information that will ultimately help students read and spell increasingly more complex text accurately and automatically.
Participants will delve deeply into the origin of English words, including historical influences on spelling and spelling rules. The six syllable types will be taught with a multisyllabic word-reading strategy. Morphology will also be addressed. Participants will review and interpret the results of a diagnostic spelling screener and learn some best practices for teaching spelling. Oral reading fluency and the relationship to comprehension will be covered, with techniques to building fluency at the word, sentence and passage level. Participants will discuss the importance of making instructional decision based on data and aligning practices with scientific evidence.
