Workshop Title: Joyful Learning: Using Active and Collaborative Structures to Differentiate Instruction

Description: In the last 20 years, the research on active learning has exploded. We now know that the benefits of an interactive classroom includes increased achievement and retention, improved behavior, and a potential boost in creativity. Movement-focused classrooms also provide opportunities for access and support for students with disabilities and others with unique learning profiles. In this high-energy session, participants will learn how to create those opportunities by exploring several collaborative, active, and brain-compatible learning techniques aimed at engaging students and making learning joyful. Related research will also be shared. Come ready to move, talk, share, and brainstorm with colleagues; the session is structured for attendees to experience these techniques (e.g., five things, copy cat, musical pairs) through demonstration and participation. This workshop is appropriate for beginner to intermediate, not designed for early childhood. 

About Dr. Kluth

Inclusion Rules is created by Dr. Paula Kluth, and a product of Inclusion Rules LLC. Paula (she/her) is a consultant, author, advocate, and independent scholar who works with teachers and families to provide inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities and to create more responsive and engaging schooling experiences for all learners. She is a former K-12 special educator who has served as a classroom teacher, co-teacher, and inclusion facilitator. Paula has also been a university professor and has taught courses on both inclusion and disability studies. Most recently, Paula’s work has centered on helping teachers and administrators educate all students in their schools and classrooms. She also frequently works with families and advocacy groups to support goals related to inclusion. In addition to inclusive education, her professional interests include Universal Design for Learning, co-teaching, and educating students with complex support needs.

Approved for 5 hours of continuing education clock hours for  Kansas licensed Speech-Language Pathologists by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. Partial financial support from the Kansas Department of Education. 

Participants will be able to: 

• Describe research-based benefits of active learning for students with and without disabilities.
• Identify 5-7 activities appropriate for your K-12 classroom and design content-based applications for them.
• Create 1-2 adaptations or “entry points” for active and collaborative learning structures to ensure accessibility, engagement, or age-appropriateness.
