Course description

Overview

Dr. Paul Lebby and Dr. Rick Gaskill will present on the following:

Too often we try to understand a particular profile of cognitive strengths and weaknesses, or a child's pattern of behaviors or emotions without first considering aspects of early neurodevelopment, or the child's social and environmental history. Surface brain functioning (what is observed) is frequently interpreted as a manifestation of the child's will, or volitional acts. However, the child's presentation can often be better understood by considering the influence of deeper brain structures and systems, modulating and mediating cognitive, behavioral and emotional functioning of the child.

Neuroscience and our understanding of the brain utilizing such techniques as advanced anatomical and functioning neuroimaging continue to evolve, and provide insights into how development, pathology or disruption of typical develop of neural systems affects later functioning. This is especially true for emotional, behavioral and cognitive processes critical for child and adolescent funtioning within a highly complex social and interpersonal world, such as the classroom or playground. A basic understanding of brain development and neural processes can go a long way in providing insights regarding how best to work with individuals suffering from trauma, be it from social emotional abuse, neglect, or physical pathology of the brain. This workshop will focus on characteristic symptomatology of brain trauma at multiple developmental stages, such as infancy, childhood, and adolescence. The social, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive impact of brain trauma will be examined at each primary stage of development, with consideration given to specifics of educational and treatment planning, to include child, school and family, as well as the longitudinal expectations for each case. The complex interactions between gene expression and environmental influences, and the balance between brain recovery/plasticity and disruption to neurodevelopment will also be discussed as related to the education and treatment of complex psychological conditions in children and adolescents.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will recognize cognitive, emotional and/or behavioral conditions suggesting deeper neurally-based disruption or influences.
  2. Participants will be able to understand and assess the child/adolescent with a history of trauma from a neurodevelopmental and neuropathology perspective.
  3. Participants will create an educational or treatment plan that addresses trauma issues and creates an educational and therapeutic web around the child/adolescent, appropriate to the specific developmental stage, or particular strengths, weaknesses, or deficits related to their underlying brain dysfunction.
  4. Participants will be able to discuss the primary systems of the brain responsible for a child's cognitive, emotional or behavioral functioning at different developmental stages (i.e. infant, childhood, adolescence).
  5. Participants will be able to describe the overlapping symptoms of brain trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and other trauma related disorders.

He is Board certified in forensic neuropsychology, fellowship-trained, and carries the rank of Professor Emeritus. He was elected to fellow status with the National Academy of Neuropsychology, one of only five specialists worldwide given the honor that year. Dr. Lebby is a U.C. Berkeley graduate and returned to complete his doctoral education and clinical training in a joint U.C. Berkeley and U.C. San Francisco program within the departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery. He remains on medical staff at UCSF, in addition to Valley Children’s Hospital and Valley Children’s Healthcare Network in Central California.

For more than 25 years, he has specialized in complex neurodiagnostic procedures and assessment of brain functioning or dysfunction. He is credentialed to perform brain-mapping procedures during awake brain surgery; Wada (transfemoral intracarotid sodium amytal/methahexital) procedures utilizing interventional radiology techniques with catheterization of the brain; and advanced neuroradiology techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and MRI-based diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography. He is the only specialist who performs this combination of procedures in Central California, and one of only a few specialists nationwide with experience conducting these procedures with pediatric patients. In addition, he has formal training and more than two decades’ experience integrating neuroimaging into his clinical practice, and provides instruction for all levels of clinicians, from specialty physicians to allied healthcare specialists.

Dr. Lebby is a published author and has written two books. He co-authored the first, “Traumatic Brain Injury in Children and Adolescents,” with his intern. He was the sole author of his second book, “Brain Imaging: A Guide for Clinicians” by Oxford University Press, which was recently updated and is printed in hard cover, paperback and electronic versions. He has published several book chapters, the most recent being, “Traumatic Encephalopathies,” in a textbook on child and adolescent neurology. Dr. Lebby has also published multiple research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and has developed and published two assessment measures of neurocognitive functioning, one for children and one for adolescents, used across the country and internationally. A committed researcher, Dr. Lebby has chaired more than 80 doctoral dissertations on topics relating to brain functioning and pathology, and clinical neuroscience. He is frequently invited to present at professional conferences and symposiums across the country at national meetings.  In his free time, Dr. Lebby enjoys photography, rock climing in the Sierra Nevada Moutains, camping with his family, and flying as a licensed pilot.
