Course description

This LETRS unit focuses on the important topic of phonology, a skill that is crucial for teachers to understand for both assessment and instruction. The role of the 44 speech sounds of English, how to assess and teach phonological and phonemic awareness within a progressive sequence, and actions to take when students do not make expected progress in this area are explored. This information is often a missing link in instruction and can make the difference in students’ reading and spelling success.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn the role of the phonological processing system and understand why phonemic awareness is a critical component of effective instruction. The consonant and vowel charts will be presented, and participants will learn the organization and distinguishing features of each of the 44 sounds in the English language and why they can be confusing for students. Multisensory phonemic awareness activities will be demonstrated. Participants will also learn how to give a screening tool for early, basic and advanced phonological awareness skills, and use the results to identify appropriate goals for instruction.

Refund Policy

Registration may be cancelled up to 14 days prior to the event for a full refund. Cancellations received within 14 days of the event will not be refunded. No-show registrations will also not be refunded.
