Title: Building AAC Awareness: Using AAC to Express a Range of Functions

Rachael Langley, Speech-Language Pathologist, Augmentative Alternative Communication Specialist

Description: There are many ways to embed language learning into the day. For those learning to use augmentative/alternative communication, there are additional considerations for language instruction. Emergent communicators are often encouraged to make requests (e.g. I want…). But there are many more ways to use language that are interesting and engaging beyond simply requesting. This session will discuss a variety of ways to use AAC to express a wide range of language functions. Topics will include ideas for embedding various functions of language into daily routines

Learning Outcomes:  

Participants will:

1. List at least 6 functions of communication in addition to requesting.
2. Describe three ways to include commenting & sharing opinions into daily routines.
3. Contrast at least two AAC systems in their organization of language to use a variety of pragmatic functions.
