Interpreters are responsible for many mental and physical functions to facilitate communication, quickly assess, correct, and repeat while being mindful of ethical best practices, and striving to collaborate with teams and families while being a neutral advocate of effective communication. Who has time to think about the basics??? All interpreters need to discuss interpreting basics and reflect in a calm, non-working environment. Participants will discuss, practice, share feedback, and reflect on the basics of grammar in interpreting, focusing on ASL sentence structure, glossing, and Signed English conceptual accuracy, benefitting deaf educational consumers who often rely on interpreters as language models.
Educational Outcomes: At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to…
List at least four grammar features of each American Sign Language.
Explain the importance of glossing when given preparation materials and how it connects to effective conceptual accuracy.
Reflect on individual areas of needed growth in the basics of ASL and manual English.
