Description: Of late, there has been a lot of controversy over Dyslexia among parents and educators. Based on 20 years of research by reading scientists, this presentation will provide an overview of dyslexia along & strategies for teaching those students diagnosed with this reading disability. Additionally, the relationship between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia will be examined and reasons for how and why we should evaluate for it will be discussed. Join us for a fascinating look into the English writing system and it’s contributions to reading.
Learner Outcomes:
Participant will be able to:
a. summarize the definition of dyslexia, its incidence and have an appreciation for the difficulty that individuals with dyslexia have learning to read.
b. list characteristics that individuals with dyslexia have and the impact those characteristics have on the individual’s academic and career objectives.
c. provide a synopsis of the roles that genetics, the neurological system along with the English Writing System play in dyslexia.
d. to articulate how dyslexia is identified and diagnosed.
e. distinguish between attentional difficulties, such as ADHD, from dyslexia.
