Course description

Empower every learner with Assistive Technology 101. This interactive, foundational training is designed to help educators and IEP team members build confidence and clarity around assistive technology (AT). Participants will gain a fresh perspective on how AT can remove barriers and expand access to learning, communication, and participation for all students.

We’ll break down what assistive technology really is and introduce the Kansas Assistive Technology Guide as a practical roadmap for navigating AT services and supports. Using the Action Checklist for IEP Teams, participants will explore how to effectively consider, determine, and provide AT within their district or agency.

Through guided activities, you’ll learn what to do before and during IEP meetings, how to gather meaningful information to support AT decisions, and how to collaborate more effectively as a team. Hands-on experiences will allow you to explore a variety of AT systems and practice feature matching—learning how to align student needs with the features of tools, rather than focusing on specific products.

You’ll leave this session feeling empowered, prepared, and confident in your ability to make informed AT decisions that support student independence, engagement, and success.

Approved for 4.5 hours of continuing education clock hours for Kansas-licensed Speech-Language Pathologists by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

Define assistive technology and describe a range of assistive technology tools and features that support student access, learning, and communication.

Identify key assistive technology features and explain how these features address common student needs, utilizing the Action Checklist for IEP Teams to support informed assistive technology consideration.

Analyze student needs, tasks, and learning environments to match assistive technology features to student needs through a feature matching approach, guided by the Kansas Assistive Technology Guide.
