DESCRIPTION:TASN Autism and Tertiary Behavior Supports would like to invite
you to join us on April 15\, 2019\, for a day of training on current topi
cs in autism spectrum disorders!&nbsp\;&nbsp\;This year's featured present
er is Susan Stokes.&nbsp\;\n\nTITLE:&nbsp\;&nbsp\;It’s All About Indepen
dent Functioning! Practical Strategies that Foster Independence for Studen
ts ASD \n\nDESCRIPTION: Are you struggling with teaching your students ind
ependent functioning skills? If so\, this training is for you! A primary g
oal when teaching students with ASD is to increase independent functioning
and decrease dependence on adults. However\, this can be quite challengin
g in school-based settings where the educational climate often fosters adu
lt support. For our students with ASD\, who by the nature of their disabil
ity can become “prompt-dependent”\, this instructional style can be qu
ite detrimental. This training will address providing guidance and instruc
tion to educational professionals/adults to maximize independent functioni
ng skills for students with ASD. A unique educational planning guide will
be shared\, designed to assist teams in identifying contexts and situation
s that require adult support\, necessitating the need for instruction and
development of independent skills. Participants will leave with numerous p
ractical\, “learn it today / use it tomorrow” evidence-based strategie
s\, incorporating various modes of technology\, to increase the independen
t functioning skills of students with ASD.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nParticipants will
be able to:\n\nDiscuss why increasing independent functioning skills in s
tudents with Autism Spectrum Disorder is a critical life skill.\n\nDefine
resources and strategies for providing guidance and instruction to educati
onal professionals/adults to maximize independent functioning skills for s
tudents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.\n\nUtilize an independent functioni
ng planning guide to identify student needs and subsequent strategies for
teaching independent functioning skills.\n\nDescribe 3 examples of how to
use the evidence-based practice of visual supports to teach independent fu
nctioning skills to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder\n\nState 3 exam
ples of how to use the evidence-based practice of video modeling to teach
independent functioning skills to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder\n
