DESCRIPTION:Paraprofessionals are vital to the success of our English Langu
 age Learners. But even when districts recognize their importance\, too oft
 en the paras are not given training in how to support students most effect
 ively. This workshop will teach participants ways to support students' sec
 ond language acquisition\, expectations for students at various levels of 
 language learning\, ways to support students without giving the answers\, 
 and strategies to build positive relationships that are crucial for studen
 t learning.\n\nParas will take away specific questions to ask when student
 s seek help\, positive ways to learn about and build relationships with st
 udents\, and ways to support students as they learn a second language.\n\n
 Participants will learn:\n•the stages of language acquisition\n•ways t
 o ask questions and provide support for students' learning\n•the connect
 ion of student learning to positive relationships \n\nLETRS (Language Esse
 ntials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) Para-Training is explicit kno
 wledge in the 5 components of reading and how to support the most needy st
 udents in your building. We will review best practices in teaching each of
  the components and participants will role play and practice each of the s
 kills.\n\nParticipants will learn how to be an effective reading coach\, l
 earn steps for correcting errors with students and how to keep data on tho
 se students\, and get students to be more independent readers.
