"Echolalia is the act of repeating or echoing words or sentences that others have said" (Prizant 1983). This is a language characteristic often seen in students with autism. Although working with students who exhibit echolalia can be frustrating, this is often a great sign. In fact, echolalia is an indicator that a student is stimulable for developing functional speech.
